Gulf Shores, Alabama

A few weeks ago, in April, my family spent a couple of days camping in Gulf Shores, Alabama. We rarely get to camp in the spring time with our busy schedules, so we were thankful to get away from it all and relax. The weather couldn't have been more perfect.

Gulf State Park is huge but the sites are spread out and everything is very well-kept. Always the sign of a good campground. :)

This picture always reminds me of a line in a Kenny Chesney song, El Cerrito Place.
"Somehow I wound up in the desert / just after daylight / where the Joshua trees grow / that little place you always liked..."

Jimmy Buffett's sister Lucy started this restaurant years ago and it's become raaaaather popular. It was easy to see why. The food is SO good, y'all.

I actually stumbled upon The Wharf at Orange Beach while looking around on Google Maps a few weeks before we went. What immediately caught my eye was the Ferris wheel. I have a thing for Ferris wheels...so of course we had to ride it. :)

They also had a yacht show going on in the marina behind the condos. We didn't want to pay to go on the boats so we just looked from above. Whew goodness. They were nice. :)

Stories & Songs | Bebo Norman - The Only Hope

To be honest, one of my great frustrations with modern Christian music is the lyrics. While songs speak of God's truth, yes, rarely are they deep. Sometimes it's hard to find music that's written in a way that really challenges or convicts you or makes you think.

Thankfully, there are a few exceptions in the Christian songwriting world, and one of them is a man named Bebo Norman. Along with many others, I was sad to hear that he is leaving the music business with no plans to return. But he has recorded 11 albums full of incredibly well-written music that I am so glad we can continue to enjoy!

One of my favorite songs of Bebo's is The Only Hope. I heard it on the radio a couple years ago and was instantly struck by the lyrics.... "I want a crumb / but You are a feast // I want a song / but You are a symphony // I want a star / but You are a galaxy..."

This song won the 2010 Dove Award for Inspirational Recorded Song of the Year, with good reason. Bebo co-wrote it with Jason Ingram, and I hope it encourages you as much as it did me.

I want to run, it's my nature to run
And I want to fight, it's my nature to fight
And I want to live, but You tell me to die
I have resolved that I'm much better off in Your hands than mine

I'm begging You to hold on tight
Begging You to hold on tight
Begging You to take my life from me

I want a crumb, but You are a feast
I want a song, but You are a symphony
I want a star, but You are a galaxy
And I have resolved that I'm much better off in what You have for me

I'm begging You to hold on tight
Begging You to hold on tight
Begging You to take my life from me
So tell me You won't let go
Tell me You won't let go
Cause You are the only hope for me

Take my life from me, It's the only hope for me
Take my life from me, It's the only hope for me
And I'll never want for more
I'll never want for more

I'm begging You to hold on tight
Begging You to hold on tight
Begging You to take my life from me
So tell me You won't let go
Tell me You won't let go
Cause You are the only hope for me

You're the only hope for me
Yeah, You're the only hope for me

The Instrument of a Legend: Vladimir Horowitz's Steinway Grand Piano

If you read the title of this post and thought, "Who is Vladimir Horowitz?!", I'd like to tell you! Except it's hard to summarize the life of such a renowned pianist in only a few words.

So here is a (short!) biography, from the Steinway & Sons website:

A pianist of legendary fame and stature, Vladimir Horowitz was born in Kiev, Ukraine. His mother, herself a professional pianist, provided his first instruction at the piano and was the first to recognize his extraordinary talents; he studied further at the Kiev Conservatory. His first public appearance was a recital in Kiev on May 30, 1920, and in 1922 he gave a series of 15 concerts in Kharkov for which he was paid in food and clothing. Although Russia was still reeling from the revolution of 1917, Horowitz fashioned successful concert tours in major cities such as Moscow, Leningrad, and Kiev -- marking the beginning of a performing career of unflagging and spectacular success.

His first international appearance came with his 1926 trip to Berlin, soon after which followed concerts in Paris, London, and New York. Further appearances in the United States solidified his reputation as an exceptional virtuoso, and the country which was to become his adopted home embraced him warmly. He was invited to the White House to play for President Hoover in 1931, and in 1933 he married Wanda Toscanini -- the daughter of the famous conductor Arturo Toscanini, who would soon conduct Horowitz and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra in performances of the Beethoven piano concertos. Horowitz permanently settled in the United States in 1940 and achieved citizenship in 1944.

Wanda Toscanini assumed a gentle stewardship of her new husband, who was in fragile physical and emotional health. Often seized with an irrational fear of failure, Horowitz found the life of touring threatening to his equilibrium. He withdrew from the concert stage for several periods during his life, and made only rare appearances after 1970. When Horowitz did schedule a concert, it often took the persuasive powers of his wife and friends to keep him from canceling at the last minute. His nagging, and often overpowering, insecurity led him to seek shock therapy in 1973, but though he seemed to achieve some benefit from treatment, he was never free of anxiety when playing in public. The one exception to this trend was when he appeared as accompanist to another artist, which he often did with baritone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, cellist Mstislav Rostropovich, and violinist Isaac Stern. Because of his long absences from the concert stage, Horowitz's popularity was largely sustained by his recordings.

Perhaps the most significant single event in Horowitz's long career was his long-overdue return to the Soviet Union (his first since his departure in the 1920s) for a series of concerts in 1986. The resulting tour became a major political event, coinciding as it did with an era of new understanding between the United States and the Soviet Union, and it resonated powerfully with Soviet audiences. Revitalized by the Soviet tour, Horwowitz signed a new contract with Sony; the contract included provisions for recording him at home on his favorite piano. He made his last such recording on November 1, 1989; on November 5 he died of a massive heart attack.

As a performer, Horowitz had huge resources of speed and power, and a clean articulation. His performances were brilliant, exciting, and often mystifying to those who found his technique enigmatic (he played, for instance, with unusually straight fingers, laying them nearly flat on the keys). Though his performances were frequently criticized for their willfulness and self-indulgent nature, there was an undeniable charisma to his playing that endeared him to most everyone who heard him.

So, you may wonder, now that you know who Vladimir Horowitz was, what about his piano?

Early in 1934, as a wedding present, Steinway & Sons presented Horowitz and his wife Wanda with a Steinway Model D, Serial #279503. In the early 1940’s, this piano was replaced with #314503, now known simply as CD 503. This is the piano Horowitz kept in his New York townhouse. He used it in many recitals and recordings in the 70’s and 80’s, and he famously demanded that the piano be his exclusive touring instrument during the last four years of his life, including for return to Moscow.

And now that you know about both the man and his piano.....here comes the real subject matter of this post.

***drum roll***

We (my sister, Sarah, and I) got to play Vladimir Horowitz's piano.

Yes, I just said that, WE GOT TO PLAY VLADIMIR HOROWITZ'S PIANO!!!!!!

A few weeks ago I got an email from Broussard's Piano Gallery in Mobile, AL, saying that Horowitz's piano was on tour and that they, being a Steinway dealer, would have it for a week in April! Not only that, we could sign up to play it for 15 minutes- for free! We immediately knew that was an opportunity we could NOT pass up. So yes indeed, we got to play it.

And all I can say is, WOW.

We actually got to play it for more like half an hour each, since there wasn't anyone else there waiting to play. It's been 4 years since we played our senior recital, so we were a little rusty, but we played everything we could think of, from Bach to Beethoven to hymns. We shot some video with my DSLR so we could always remember how it sounded- and so we could share it with you!

(I don't usually shoot video with my 50mm f/1.4 lens, so that explains why so little of this was in focus! Sorry!)

Of special note: the piece that I played in the video, Traumerei by Robert Schumann, was one of Horowitz's signature pieces to perform. When he returned to Moscow, he played it, so I knew I had to play it myself. :) Horowitz's piano was made for playing this piece. The touch on most pianos is too hard for all the notes to sound, because it's such a quiet piece, but on his piano it was perfect.

If you ever get the chance to play a Steinway grand, do so! It's an incredible experience, and playing Horowitz's piano was one that we will never forget! Thank you, Broussard's, for making this possible!

Stories & Songs | Drew Holcomb & The Neighbors - Live Forever

It was late October last year...one evening I was on my computer and for some random reason I decided to look up Drew and Ellie Holcomb. I'd heard of them, from other artists who went to their concerts, but I'd never heard any of their music. So I decided to fix that. :)

I instantly LOVED not only Drew and Ellie's music, but them. How is it that you can love people so much when you've never met them?! They are genuine, deep, real, authentic, hard-working, music-loving, cross-country-traveling, sweet, and talented people...old souls with a heart for others and for Jesus. (If you've ever met them, and they're not, please tell me, because if I'm not mistaken, they are all that. :))

The song at the top of the list when I searched for Drew and Ellie's music on YouTube was called Live Forever. Drew tells the story behind the song:
"My sister has 3 beautiful young children. Christmas of 2008 I spent Christmas morning watching them see what "Santa" had brought them and I saw their innocence and joy and wished I could bottle it up and drink it. 6 months later their whole family left Nashville and moved to Panama. I was brokenhearted, and I wrote "Live Forever" for them, hoping that they will never lose or forget how loved they are and what abundant life there is in the world, even amidst all our disappointments and failures."
(More on the song here and here.)

Musically, the song follows a pretty classic approach: start out quiet, and gradually build until the end. Drew and Ellie's voices are filled with a raw honesty and earnestness as they sing words that means so much to them personally. Since they filmed the music video, they now have a baby girl of their own, sweet and adorable EmmyLou. :)

The music video is one of my favorites ever as far as music videos go. It was shot in the middle of summer in Memphis...Drew wrote the following about filming it:
"I have always wanted to make a music video for this song, but found it difficult to put on film the emotion the song has for me. I finally decided that the only way to do it was to incorporate my family, the very ones I wrote the song for. We gathered in Memphis, my hometown, to film us doing what we love; laughing, eating, and enjoying each other's company in places where we have a deep history. The Hi Tone Cafe. Central BBQ. My Uncle's Farm, and my Great Grandfather's 1942 Jeep, still in my father's possession. My nieces and nephew steal the show with their innocence, their joy, and their courage."

Here are the lyrics:

Laughter is the only thing that'll keep you sane
In this world that's dying more and more everyday
Don't let evil get you down
In this madness spinning round and round

I want you to live forever
Underneath the sky so blue

Some people say faith is a childish game
Play on, children, like it's Christmas day
Sing me a song, sing me a melody
Sing out loud, you're a symphony

I want you to live forever
Underneath the sky so blue
I want you to live forever
Underneath the sky so blue

Take courage when the road is long
Don't ever forget you're never alone

I want you to live forever
Underneath the sky so blue
I want you to live forever
Underneath the sky so blue

Oh yeah, I want you to live forever
Underneath the sky so blue
Oh yeah, I want you to live forever
Underneath the sky so blue

I want you to live forever

So, without further ado, may I present...Live Forever:

On a personal note...if I could trade lives with anybody for a day (or even just a couple of hours) it'd have to be Ellie. We both play piano/keys, guitar, and mandolin...and to travel around the country making wonderful music like she does? I would love that. :)

Also...Drew's band is so talented...and I have to tell y'all a funny dream I had the other night. I dreamed that I met one of The Neighbors, Nate Dugger, who plays guitar. In the video he plays a black Gibson hollow body electric (see, I told you I was a musical instrument geek!), so I dreamed that I got to play the intro to Live Forever on his guitar.....y'all, it was awesome. One day I'm going to do that in real life. :)

I'm a light and location geek, too...so in case you thought the locations in the video were awesome and you want to go there...as Drew mentioned, they filmed at the Hi-Tone Cafe (0:21), Central Barbecue (1:44), and a park in Memphis by the Mississippi River (0:06); they also shot at Shelby Park (0:04) and the Academy Street pedestrian bridge in Nashville (0:01, 0:09).

Hope y'all enjoy the song!

Stories & Songs | Steven Curtis Chapman - Magnificent Obsession

It's hard (for me, at least) to think of contemporary Christian music without also thinking of Steven Curtis Chapman. This godly man has been writing, recording, and performing music for over two decades - music that has influenced and inspired so many. His honest, heart-searching lyrics and the earnestness in his voice point to his deep faith in God and in the truth of His Word.

I had heard SCC's music for a while before his daughter, Maria, passed away nearly 5 years ago, but seeing his family walk through tragedy gave me such a different perspective on him. This is not just a man who sings about holding on to Jesus through trial - he has been through one of the deepest trials a person could ever face and holds on to Jesus even tighter because of it.

One of my favorite Steven Curtis Chapman songs will always be Magnificent Obsession, from 2001's Declaration. The lyrics speak of how easy it is for us as believers to get distracted with worry and the things of this world - yet how desperately we need Jesus to be our "one consuming passion". I find myself so often praying the words to the second verse... "cut through these chains that tie me down // to so many lesser things // let all my dreams fall to the ground // until this one remains....You are everything I want // You are everything I need..."

Here is the audio from the original 2001 recording:

SCC recently re-recorded several older songs of his, as well as some new ones, in 2011's re:creation. He writes of the new recording:
"I found that since Maria went to heaven, many of the songs that I have written over the years continue to grow in meaning. The heart behind doing this was asking, how can I take some of those songs that have a new depth to me and reinterpret those, recreate those? Thus the title re:creation.”

One of those songs was Magnificent Obsession. He took the original, with its thundering (magnificent, really :)) guitars and drums and stripped it down to a quiet, yet even more earnest version. Now when you hear him sing, "I have cried and prayed // and still I seem to stay // in the middle of life's complications", you know that those tears and prayers have been offered up in a way he never imagined when he recorded the original...

(I couldn't find a YouTube video with the re:creation recording, but you can listen to it here.)

Lord, You know how much
I want to know so much
In the way of answers and explanations
I have cried and prayed
And still I seem to stay
In the middle of life’s complications
All this pursuing leaves me feeling like I’m chasing down the wind
But now it’s brought me back to You
And I can see again

This is everything I want
This is everything I need
I want this to be my one consuming passion
Everything my heart desires
Lord, I want it all to be for You, Jesus
Be my magnificent obsession

So capture my heart again
Take me to depths I’ve never been
Into the riches of Your grace and Your mercy
Return me to the cross
And let me be completely lost
In the wonder of the love
That You’ve shown me
Cut through these chains that tie me down to so many lesser things
Let all my dreams fall to the ground
Until this one remains

You are everything I want
You are everything I need
I want You to be my one consuming passion
Everything my heart desires
Lord, I want it all to be for You
I want it all to be for You

You are everything I want
And You are everything I need
Lord, You are all my heart desires
You are everything to me
